New Zealand-based international non-profit Just Peoples get into partnership with Light of Hope’s ‘Porua (The Reader) Project’ to provide access to storybooks to children in Bangladeshi schools. The objective is to improve early grade reading skills and develop creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills in children. Till date, the partnership helps 14 schools to provide library support and it impacted about 5,850 children.
Just Peoples is a platform that raises small grants through various activities and from individual donors to support social entrepreneurs across Asia and Africa to invest in small-scale projects. Light of Hope and Just People have been working together for last one year to raise fund and set up these amazing libraries in rural remote and underprivileged schools.
There are over 100,000 primary schools in Bangladesh and hardly 5% of these schools have a functional library with access to storybooks to children. Only 30% children attain basic Bengali literacy skills after primary level. Setting up a low-cost library and ensuring proper access to children in these libraries is the smartest investment we can make. That’s why Light of Hope decided to start its Porua project back in 2015. As of today, under the project, Light of Hope set up more than 200 libraries impacting over 70,000 children.
Costing less than a dollar per child, the Porua project of Light of Hope is the most efficient way to improve children’s reading skills and improve imagination & creativity.
Just Peoples and Light of Hope’s partnership will continue to explore more opportunity in future to set up more libraries across Bangladesh in different schools.
